Research and Recording

The Survey Branch of the Royal Commission is responsible for recording and research to provide authoritative information and interpretations of archaeological and historic sites, buildings and landscapes, concentrating particularly on under-represented and under-recognised elements of our heritage or those which are nationally or regionally important examples of their type. The results of our work are disseminated widely through a range of media including the online database Coflein, books and publications, research reports and exhibitions.

Our strategy for survey encompasses a wide range of projects. These include thematic or area-based projects and a strategic programme of consultations on individual sites and buildings at risk through neglect, environmental damage or development.

We provide professional advice to others on the survey and interpretation of sites, and aim to set standards through our own projects and the publication of our Levels of Survey. We also aim to develop and expand approaches to recording, understanding and interpretation through the continuing development of techniques such as digital survey, aerial reconnaissance and dendrochronological sampling.

We welcome the opportunity to work in partnership, for example with local authorities, universities, conservation bodies and voluntary and community groups.
