Talks and Lectures

Members of the Royal Commission's staff can visit groups to give illustrated talks and presentations on their areas of expertise. These groups may be, for example, local or family history societies, community or retirement groups, or, indeed, the London Welsh. Previous lecture subjects have included:

  • Aerial photography of archaeological sites.
  • Garden history.
  • Archaeology in your area.
  • Historic buildings.
  • The heritage of a particular area.
  • Industrial archaeology.
  • The history of World War II in Wales.
  • General talks on the work of the Royal Commission or the National Monuments Record of Wales.

Presentations are illustrated by images from the National Monuments Record of Wales Archive.

We also attend family and local history fairs across Wales, where members of the public can enquire about material in the National Monuments Record of Wales that may be of interest to them and chat about their particular interests.

Sometimes a member of staff will lead a tour of a site: one very successful example was a visit by a Young Archaeologists’ Club to the remains of the former World War II Rocket Range at Ynyslas, Ceredigion.

We have participated in the European Heritage Days programme of events, organised by the Civic Society of Wales. Our investigators have led guided tours of historic pubs in Denbigh, industrial sites in Swansea, which featured in the Royal Commission publication Copperopolis, the Royal Naval Propellant Factory at Caerwent, and historic sites in Aberystwyth.

The Royal Commission hosts an annual series of lectures in Aberystwyth. Subjects in the past few years have included: Wales from the Air in 3D: a virtual tour of the history of Wales; The World Heritage Site of Blaenavon; Houses and History in the March of Wales; The National Monuments Record of Wales Archive and its Collections; Recent Archaeological Work in the Uplands of Wales; Thomas Thomas Chapels’ Architect; and Discovering Historic Gardens. These lectures are free of charge and are advertised in the local press; further details may be obtained from the Library and Enquiries Service.

Our Education Officer will visit initial teacher-training establishments or participate in in-service training courses held by local education authorities to demonstrate how Coflein and materials from the National Monuments Record of Wales can be used in the classroom to illustrate a wide variety of subjects in the National Curriculum.

If you would like a speaker to address a meeting please contact Library and Enquiries Service. Please give as much notice as possible as we are only able to attend a limited number of events each year. You can also arrange for a specially tailored group visit to our Library and Search Room in Aberystwyth for a presentation and to view archive material appropriate to your area of interest.
